As the Fall 2010 season came to close, one very noticeable change is the return of curvy models on the high fashion runways. Where do I begin— Karolina Kourkova, Alessandra Ambrosio, Ana Beatriz, Bar Rafaeli, Bianca Balti, Lily Cole… basically the commercial models who are sexy, do Victoria’s Secret and Sports Illustrated, now getting booked for serious shows. Out of a sudden, you see boobs everywhere, boobsy enough to make gay men freak out at the front row.
No surprise if it was indeed Givenchy’s Fall 2009 casting of Adriana Lima that started the trend, the French house’s level of casting is poised to be amongst the ranks of Prada pre-2008, and Calvin Klein in terms of exclusivity and to-watch meter. The strategy surely made competitors nervous. Casting models that no one thought they would appear is a great game of publicity, people talk about it and praised about it. There is almost nothing negative or difficult about bringing a super back on the high fashion runways. The only bad point I can think of is the impact on all the young, new models— Samantha Gradoville opened and closed Prada, but you might have been more interested in Doutzen, Alessandra and Miranda.
